Skills: Great at fixing things, especially technology. Good with his hands. Playing drums and guitar. Eating ridiculously spicy food (and mass amounts of food in general, as he has a seemingly hollow stomach). Fluency in Spanish. Telling cringeworthy dad jokes.
Resources/Financial: While not always the most prudent with finances, Joey isn't a complete idiot. He has a small sum set aside should he ever fall on hard times, though he tends to live fairly frugally day-to-day anyway.
Goals: Stay alive for as long as possible. Keep Adelaide safe. Take down the Tchoupitoulas Sundae Challenge and be added to the hall of fame.
Story Hooks: Suspicious witches eyeballing him (and his sister) for their sudden appearance. Neutral witches happy to make nice with one of their own. Others who have lost a significant other to commiserate with. Fellow musicians to jam with.
Appearance
The First Thing You Notice
A somewhat suspicious yet handsome looking guy who seems to be all sharp angles and seriousness until he shakes it off with a quirk of his dorky smile.Personal Style
Joey is not a conscious dresser. The ultimate believer in comfort over style, he can sometimes look slobbish in his choice of attire. Sweatpants and hoodies are a permanent wardrobe staple, as are sleeveless sporting jerseys and baggy gym shorts during warmer months. Joey has an extensive jacket collection, from bombers to denim and leather, though he tends to leave them open no matter how chilly it gets. Beanies are all-season attire and are favoured any day, as are sneakers (of which he owns far too many pairs). He doesn't shy away from colours, often mixing and matching clashing shades without much care. That isn't to say he's entirely hopeless; he knows to put on a tie and button up a dress shirt should he need to make an effort.Distinguishing Features
- Narrow set, dark brown eyes that border on being black.
- A somewhat crooked Roman nose that's clearly been broken once or twice.
- A broad, bulky stature that's mostly made of muscle.
- Resting bitch face that's frequently dispelled with a toothy grin or overly dumb expression.
- Calloused, faintly scarred hands from both work and magic.
- A wolf tattoo on his inner left bicep.

Contrary to any preconceived ideas about him stemming from his history, Joey is surprisingly well-rounded. A sociable and inviting person, he somehow tends to draw others to him with his open nature and magnetic aura. A total goofball, he is the type to crack a joke and laugh at it himself regardless of whether or not it was funny. Cringey? Totally, but Joey isn't the type to care. He's overtly resilient to what others think of him and can easily brush off an insult with a shrug, for there are surely others who appreciate his particular brand of personality. An advocate of the "if you don't try, you'll never know" mindset, Joey is openminded and just the right amount of daring to be interesting without being reckless. He's a rational realist, someone who is quick to assess situations and adapt to best fit them, though there's always something weirdly endearing about him no matter who he finds himself amongst.
While he did a lot of growing up since his teenage years, several traits have refused to be shaken off. Joey can be defiant and rebellious when backed into a corner, sometimes to the point of being petty just for the hell of it. A bit of a wild child, he doesn't tend to think things through thoroughly before speaking or acting, which can lead to people assuming that he's more callous than he actually is. While he doesn't set out to be insensitive, Joey can be emotionally blind when it comes to others and himself, as expression of emotion does not come easily to him and he quickly grows frustrated at himself if misunderstood. Holding his attention can also be tough at times, as Joey is the type to grow restless quickly and act in a flighty manner that has the potential to insult or injure others without true meaning. If it's any consolation, he isn't afraid to apologise if he has reason.
Joey has always been the type to make friends easily. A social butterfly, he's the guy who has facebook and instagram friends and followers in the thousands, and while a lot of his relationships are superficial, he isn't incapable of forming lasting bonds. He isn't overly picky when it comes to acquaintances but he does tend to keep a small number of people closer than others, but he isn't all that different personality-wise when interacting with everyone. He tends to be both a follower and a leader, depending on the situation, though he is fairly flexible when it comes to delegations of power and rarely feels the need to assert any kind of dominance. He's too amenable for such displays.
History
Joey's birth was a mistake. He was the unplanned result of an extra-maritial affair between Charles Beauchemin and Sylvia Estevez, the former an affluent member of the New Orleans magical community. Sylvia, an undocumented runaway from Hermosillo, Mexico who had been abandoned by her Catholic family after their dormant ancestral magic manifested during her childhood, was working as a waitress in the Big Easy when she and Charles began their relationship. She was somehow able to disguise her pregnancy from him until it was too late to consider abortion. Persuading Charles to assist was easy, given that his family had no idea about his affair, and Sylvia agreed to keep quiet providing he supported her and the baby financially once a paternity test assured him of the child's legitimacy.
Early life was difficult for Joey, and Sylvia's plans to support herself and her baby weren't as foolproof as she had imagined. She had to work hard to make ends meet, despite the financial stipend from Charles (who had shown no interest in being a part of their lives), and Sylvia grew to quietly resent her son as time passed. A series of bad decisions eventually led Sylvia to approach the Beauchemin family in the hopes that they would take Joey in. It was agreed that, should the family do this, Sylvia was waiving her right to be a part of Joey's life from then on. As she was intent on leaving town to start fresh with her newest boyfriend, she willingly agreed.
Joey was four years old when he came to live with Charles and his family, though the toll his existence took on the Beauchemins marriage was never made apparent and he never dared ask. It took some adjustment, as it had been only him and his mother and a string of strange men over the years, to fit into a generic familial setting with its structure and conventions. Joey had always wanted a sibling and the Beauchemins had two daughters; Adelaide and Alexia, and he spent the first few months following the elder of the girls around much like a puppy in the hopes of getting her to like him to varying results. Given his magical stock, Joey grew up around magic and followed any instruction he was given as well as he was able as his own powers manifested, also to varying results.
No stranger to the differences between himself and the rest of the family, Joey learned the full extent of his past once he reached adolescence and he did not take the news well. The negative impact of his mother's abandonment assisted in fuelling a rebellious teenage attitude that saw him throw himself into all kinds of juvenile trouble. The fact that his magic grew unstable during the beginnings of puberty also didn't help, and Joey dabbled in petty crime and had numerous run ins with law enforcement throughout his early teens until an eagle-eyed teacher at school attempted to steer him towards an outlet; music. Channelling his feelings into mastering an instrument—drums, to focus himself while outletting his rage—Joey ended up in several garage bands throughout the years, several of them well-known locally.
It was during one of these shows that he first talked to Jenna Haskell.
While both of them were juniors in the same high school, their paths had never crossed until that night. Sitting on the sidewalk way after curfew while waiting for Jenna's older sister to pick her up, they ended up swapping numbers. A few weeks later, they were dating. It didn't take long for people to notice that they were that couple; the sort who the sappy songs about high school sweethearts were written about. It was passionate and all-consuming, as any teenage love story was, and they assumed they were built to last. They even committed to trying long distance after graduation, with Joey heading to Mississippi State University on a partial scholarship to major in Communication Studies, while Jenna moved west to Arizona where she studied Nursing.
Everything was good. Everything was great. Yet fate or circumstance did not have the same idea. During his third year of schooling, late at night while holed up in the library working on a paper, Joey received the news that nobody expects but everyone subconsciously dreads; Jenna had been involved in a car accident that abruptly ended her life. Unable to process the surprising information, he ended up causing substantial damage to the university library that was explained away by the fire department as an electrical fault.
The bleak aftermath of Jenna's death felt endless to Joey, who opted to take time out from college and lament. Eventually he got a part time gig at a bar, where he worked security, in addition to pulling shifts at his sister's witchcraft supply store. Each day bled into the one before it and his grief seemed unending. But, as pain is wont to do, the sharp sting of loss dulled over time and he eventually allowed himself to be talked into returning to Mississippi to obtain his degree. Once he returned to NOLA after graduating and with no solid prospects ahead, Joey continued to follow in Adelaide's footsteps; he joined the same coven...and dipped out of it just as quickly once the truth about his sister's affair became known to her curse-caster beau.
After all, the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, and death wasn't something he was ready to consider quite yet.
